What is Google AMP and what is the benefit of this project?

Yesterday, Google published his project, Google AMP Project. AMP stands for "Accelerated Mobile Pages" and wants to optimize user's searching time on the web.

Most webpages, loaded from a mobile device, are loading slow. Even if the content is loaded using a 4G connection or Wi-Fi (and the webpage loads faster), most of webpages haven't a mobile version and it is hard to understand the post. Even if the webpage is responsive, or the website redirects to a mobile version, most of these webpages, are using a lot of internet bandwidth (by displaying images at full size or by using many HTTP requests - scripts, fonts, iframes, css styles, videos etc), and usually the text is under boxes which are opening continuously on the screen (facebook like, twitter, newsletter, or... ads). The principal problem is that you don't know which website will load faster, or is built for mobile, when you are trying to search on the web using Google. Imagine you are trying to load one of these websites using a 3G, 2G or even a... GPRS connection.

That's why Google wanted to help users to find a content without any of the problems above. If you will search on Google, for example, "mars", from your mobile phone, now, it will show a carousel on first or second position, named "Top Stories", which contains all AMP approved results.

Google created a documentation about building an AMP website, and it is available on the project official website. An AMP website is, simply, a HTML page. There are some requested code snippets you must add on the website. Some HTML tags are disallowed (ex: img, iframe, object etc) and you have to use some AMP defined tags. Tags inline styles are prohibited too. External styles can't be used. Scripts can't be used. Some css properties can't be added to selectors. So, you should create another version of your website in AMP style.

NETCreator just created his AMP version of the website. The page is loading very faster (almost instantly on a 2G connection).
